Reading, Pa. (April 16, 2013) -
Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep.) and
Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) were both 3-for-3 with two walks as Alvernia (23-8) defeated visiting Rutgers-Newark (7-23) by a score of 11-8 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. Alvernia threw five pitchers on the afternoon with
Matt Osgoodby (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) earning the win and
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) earning his eighth save of the season.
The Crusaders went up 4-0 after the first inning thanks to three singles, a Rutgers error and a sacrifice fly. Rutgers got one back in the second with a single and a double, but Alvernia answered with another four-run inning in the bottom of the third.
Matt Patterson (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) led off the inning with a triple, and after a walk from Gehris and another Rutgers error, Alvernia plated two runs. Two more came across on a single to left field from Stimpson to put Alvernia up 8-1.
Rutgers kept it somewhat close with a three-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning to make it 8-4 for Alvernia, but the Crusaders added one more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-4 with another RBI-single from Stimpson. A two-RBI single from
Dustin Arnold (Annville, Pa./Lebanon Catholic made it 11-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Rutgers managed three more runs on the day, but Becker-Menditto shut them down to end the game.
Alvernia is back in action on Wed. April 17th when they travel to Rowan University for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30pm.
