Crusaders Top Moravian With 5-Run Eighth

Gambino Earns First Win

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 24, 2013) - Alvernia University (27-9) sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs on four hits and an error in the eighth inning of a 9-6 win over Moravian College (18-16) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Gillespie Field.

Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) for the first RBI single fo the eighth inning then after a Billy Turner (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) bunt single the Crusaders knocked in runs in four straight at-bats.  Two on ground outs and two on singles by Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) and Kevin Bailey (Fallston, Md./Fallston).

Gehris and Bailey both had 2-RBI days for the Crusaders as did Matt Patterson (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham).

Senior reliever Anthony Gambino (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) earned his first win of the season facing just one batter in the seventh, but retiring him on a groundout to preserve a tie game.  Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) earned a 4-out save, his 10th of the season.  He stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd in the eighth then threw a 1-2-3 ninth.  His 10th save of the season sets a new single season record for saves breaking a record he shared with Austin Rohrbach (2008-11).  His 19 career saves is also a school record.

Ray, Turner, Patterson, Gehris, and Bailey all had 2-hit days for the Crusaders.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule on Friday at Arcadia.  One win in the 3-game series with the Knights would give Alvernia the top seed in the Commonwealth Conference Championships which are next Thursday through Saturday at Owls Field in West Lawn.
