Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) took care of all but six outs on his own with a career-high 15 strikeouts during a 2-0 win and Alvernia University (30-9, 18-3) posted a 3-run sixth inning in game two for a 5-3 win and a sweep of Arcadia University (21-16-1, 12-9) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Weinhold has now reached double figures in strikeouts in each of his last three starts and five of his nine this season. Through the regular season he has 83 Ks, 13 shy of Todd Meyer's single season record.
The Crusaders pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the third inning of the opener and Weinhold did the rest limiting the Knights to just a pair of base hits.
Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) tripled home the first run and scored on a squeeze bunt by
Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson).
Arcadia had a 3-2 lead through four innings of game two, but the Crusaders scored three in the fifth helping to run their current home win streak to 12 games.
Billy Turner (Columbia, Pa./North Warren Regional) scored on an error to tie the game then
Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) and
Cody Younker (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) drove in runs with RBI singles.
Facing the 3-2 deficit in the top of the sixth, the Crusaders had to go to closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) with the bases loaded an no one out. He got the force at home on a comebacker, the second out on a strikeout, and closed the sixth on a dribler in front of the plate. He threw a 1-2-3 seventh and picked up his sixth win of the season.
Alvernia closes out the regular season at Haverford on Monday and will begin the Commonwealth Championships next Thursday against #4 Widener at 4:00 p.m. at Owl's Field.
