Crusaders Finish Off 3-Game Sweep Of Etown

Weinhold And Price Throw Complete Games

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Junior starter Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and sophomore Steve Price (Barto,Pa/Boyertown) combined for 14 innings pitched, striking out 16 and surrendering just one run during Saturday's conference double header sweep of Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.

Alvernia took game one 3-1 and erupted in the second game 19-0.

Weinhold, the starter for game one and current Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week, faced the minimum through the Blue Jay's first 12 batters erasing a one-out walk in the first with a pick-off. He worked in and out of trouble in the sixth inning when Elizabethtown pushed across its only run of the day on a Tyler Weary RBI-single to center. Aside from the one earned run the lefty was lights out as he struck out nine Blue Jays using a fastball/changeup that the opposing batters couldn't solve.

Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) began the scoring with a solo shot to center field.  Matt Patterson (Hamilton N.J./Nottingham) continued to swing a hot bat as he put the ball over the left center field fence in the bottom of the sixth to give the Crusaders a 3-1 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Weinhold retired the final three Etown hitters to secure his fifth win of the year and improved on his ERA to 1.09.

Game two saw an offensive explosion as the Crusaders plated 19 runs solidified by another strong pitching performance from Price.

Seven Crusaders had multiple hits including senior Billy Turner (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) who went 2-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and 4 RBIs. Turner said, “When I'm at the plate I want to have a quality at bat and square up on the baseball. See the ball hit the ball. When I'm in a hitters count I look for a pitch that I can unload on when I swing.”

Aside from Turner, Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, PA/Malvern Prep), Patterson, Gehris, Richie Riccardi (Manalapan,NJ/Manalapan), Dustin Arnold (Annville, Pa/Lebanon Catholic), and Brok Martin (Ephrata, Pa/Ephrata) all had multiple hits.

Alvernia tagged Etown starter Rob Cressman for six runs in just an inning and two-thirds and did not let up when the Blue Jays went to the bullpen. Alvernia had 16 hits in game two and put on its best offensive performance of the season.

Price surrendered just three hits and K'd seven in his best start of the year. Price improves to 4-1.

With the wins, Alvernia moves to 18-8 on the season and 9-3 in conference play. It returns to action Sunday afternoon when it hosts Manahattanville.
