Alvernia Bats Stay Hot Against Manhattanville

Reading, Pa. (April 7, 2013) - On Sunday afternoon Alvernia (19-8) defeated non-conference opponent Manhattanville College (8-17) by a score of 9-0 on a cloudless day at Angelica ParkAlvernia tallied eleven hits on the afternoon and received yet another brilliant pitching performance.

The Crusaders were led by freshman James Colgan (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) who made his first career start. Colgan looked sharp as he threw six plus innings and struck out three.

In the third inning, two Crusaders reached-on-error and were driven in by a sacrifice fly from Matt Patterson (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham), and a base hit from Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa/Holy Name).

Billy Turner (Columbia, NJ/North Warren Regional) went 2-for-4 with an RBI-triple and Gehris had a three-hit day. Patterson also contributed a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs.

Cody Smith (Hanover, Pa/Delone Catholic) entered the game in the sixth and inherited Colgan's two runners. Smith fanned the first batter and was able to get out of the jam as his defense turned a dramatic 5-3-2 double playRich Collins (Lebanon, Pa/Cedar Crest) worked a scoreless ninth inning to slam the door.

Turner, the designated hitter, and first baseman Matt Patterson have been on fire out of the three and four spots in the lineupPatterson is now hitting .337 and slugging .506, while Turner has 19 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with three home runs.

With the win, Alvernia improves to 19-8 and are currently on a five-game winning streak. During that span the Crusaders have allowed just six runs thanks to solid pitching and tight defense.

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday when they face off against Muhlenberg on the road.
