Doylestown, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2014) - Sophomore
Margaret Wentzel scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season and Alvernia University (6-4) defeated Delaware Valley (5-6) by a 3-2 final Wednesday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Delaware Valley.
The Aggies opened the scoring on a blast from Carlie Barlus in the eighth minute. She took a pass from Jessica Summers and drove home her third goal of the season from just inside the top of the circle.
Wentzel's first of the game knotted the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.Â
Emily Kelly found her with an outlet pass and Wentzel carried around the defense and beat the goalie between the pads.
Kelly earned her second assist of the game in the 52nd minute when she set up
Natalie Messaros for a tip-in in front of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Messaros.
Wentzel added a needed insurance goal in the 64th minute dribbling downfield through the defense and pulling up in the circle to rip a shot past the DVC goalie.
Summers scored two minutes later for the Aggies to pull within a goal at 3-2, and the hosts had two corners in the final 60 seconds, but couldn't convert.
Senior goalie
Erin Wunsch made six saves to earn the win.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule on Saturday when it hosts Messiah College at 2:00 p.m.
