Crusaders Handle Lions, 4-0

Alvernia Controls Playoff Destiny

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2014) - Alvernia University (9-7, 3-2) knocked in three second-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Albright College (2-15, 2-3) Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference play at Albright.

The Crusaders dominated the latter part of the game, spreading their goals across the half. Ahead 1-0, Summer Liberto put Alvernia on the board again in the 41st minute. During a penatly corner, Liberto ripped a shot that deflected off an Albright defender and found its way into the upper left side of the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Margaret Wentzel finished Alvernia's scoring on the day as she picked up her 17th and 18th goals of the season. In the 52nd minute, Wenztel drove the ball across the front of the net, lodging it in the right corner of the goal to go ahead 3-0. Wentzel notched her second in the 64th minute, giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead on a breakawy goal down the center of the field.

The Crusaders put one on the board in the first half, posting a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game. Natalie Messaros dodged through defenders towards the middle of the circle to face Lion goalie Gabby Frake one on one. Messaros beat Frake, ripping her fifth goal of the season to the left corner.

Alvernia outshot Albright 20-4, posting 13 shots on goal.

Erin Wunsch secured the shutout for the Crusaders in goal.

With the win, Alvernia controls its own destiny for Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The Crusaders are tied with Messiah for third place and hold a one game lead over Stevenson, which sits in fifth. Stevenson concludes Commonwealth regular season play with Hood and Albright, while Alvernia has LVC and Widener left to face.

The Crusaders will continue to set their playoff course on Saturday, hosting Lebanon Valley College at 2:00 as they Play For The Cure to raise breast cancer awareness.
