Reading, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2014) - Alvernia University (6-5-1, 1-1) tallied a goal per half to take a 2-0 victory over Widener University (7-3-1, 0-2) in Commonwealth Conference action Wednesday evening on the Alvernia Turf Field.
The Crusaders used a strong attack in the 30th minute to post their first goal of the night. After a header from
Joe Raymond was saved by Pride goalie Dave Sousa,
Devin Wilt attempted the follow up off the rebound. Sousa saved Wilt's first shot, but was unable to maintain control of the ball.
Josh Wollaston capitalized on the mistake, pushing a quick pass to Wilt who drove in his second goal of the season for the 1-0 lead.
Alvernia added insurance in the second half with a breakaway goal. In the 60th minute,
Rocky Elgogari found
Cody Shirk in the middle of the field, who gave the Crusaders the 2-0 advantage on a ripped shot to the left post.
Freshman
Zach Rider collected five saves in the matchup. With tonight's victory, Rider and the Crusaders have secured all six wins this season by way of shutout.
Alvernia takes a break from conference play this weekend, traveling to Susquehanna on Saturday for a 3:30 start.
