Reading, Pa. (Nov. 15, 2014) - #4 Alvernia University (11-8-4) came up short against #1 Penn State-Harrisburg (14-5-2), falling 4-2 in penalty kicks in ECAC semifinal action Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
After holding a 0-0 deadlock through two overtimes, both teams continued to remain goalless after the first penalty kicks. James Bigler and Alex Pannucio put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-0 on the second and third round of PKs, both finding the lower left corner of the goal.
Andrew Baylor kept the Crusaders' in the race, burying his shot to the left to close the deficit 2-1. Alec Denglinger also netted his kick, finding the inside of the right post. However, Penn State Harrisburg converted on its last two kicks to survive and advance into Sunday's final.
The Crusaders and the Lions were evenly matched throughout the day, with the Crusaders narrowly leading in shots 10-9 and both goalies collecting three saves before penalty kicks.
Alvernia ripped back to back shots in the second overtime, but was unable to convert.
Penn State-Harrisburg will play in the ECAC championship game Sunday, taking on the winner of Misericordia vs Widener.
