Reading, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2014) - Lycoming College (2-2, 1-0) scored 47 second-half points including the last six of the game for a 67-64 win over Alvernia University (2-2, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
The Crusaders built a 35-20 lead at halftime, holding the Warriors to just 6-of-25 shooting over the first 20 minutes. Lycoming cut the game to one point, 42-41, scoring 22 of the first 28 points of the second half capped by an Issac Boden 3 at 11:57.
The Crusaders responded two minutes later with a quick 10-0 run that gave the hosts a 58-46 lead with 8:25 to play. Lycoming answered with five points from Nykolas King during a 13-1 run that tied the score at 59-all with 3:56 to go.
Mike Miller stopped the run with a corner 3 on the next Alvernia possession, but the Crusaders managed just two free throws over the final 3:16. Lycoming got a 3 from Boden at 1:21 to tie the score at 64-all then hit 3 free throws in the final 36 seconds for the final spread. Alvernia had a chance to tie in the last possession, but
Alex Shippen's 3 was off the mark just short of the horn.
"In games like these, it's the small thing," said Alvernia head coach
Mike Miller after the loss. "We can't protect a lead with 20-of-35 from the free throw line and 23 turnovers."
Junior
Charles Cooper led the Crusaders with 16 points and nine rebounds.Â
Harrison Deyo scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds. Shippend and
Lamont Clark scored 11 apiece and
Mike Miller finished with 10. The Warriors got 18 from Boden--all in the second half. King finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The game lasted longer than two hours with 51 fouls.Â
Alvernia continues the season on Tuesday with a trip to The College at Old Westbury.
