Reading, Pa. (Dec. 15, 2014) - Senior
Kaitlyn Yoh scored 20 points and added nine assists and six rebounds to lead Alvernia University (4-4) to an 87-81 overtime win over Misericordia University (0-8) Monday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
Sophomore
Tyra Roberts went 3-for-3 in overtime and Yoh hit four free throws in the extra period.
Four starters finished in double figures for the Crusaders with Roberts and
Chelsea Ebersole scoring 18 apiece and
Olivia Andrefski adding 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Alvernia had a chance to seal the deal in regulation when Andrefski was fouled on a corner 3 with a half second left on the clock in a tie game, but the freshman missed all three sending the game to overtime.
Misericordia scored on the first possession of overtime, but Roberts answered in the post. The teams traded single free throws before another Roberts bucket put the Crusaders up 79-77. The Cougars scored four straight for an 81-79 lead with 90 seconds to play, but Roberts scored her third bucket of OT in the paint and Ebersole nailed a corner 3 as the Crusaders scored the final eight points of the game for the win.
Misericordia opened up a 9-point lead midway through the first half taking a 24-15 lead on a 3 from Shannon Croasdale with 9:02 left in the half.
The lead was eight points, 27-19, two minutes later before the Crusaders put together a run of seven straight capped by an Ebersole 3 to cut the gap to one, but the Cougars pushed it back to nine in the final minute of the half and settled for a 39-32 lead at halftime after a pair of free throws from Yoh.
Alvernia cut the second half lead down to one with eight of the first 10 points of the half, but Misericordia had an answer every time until Ebersole hit a 3 to forge a 52-all tie.Â
Morgan Downs scored on a layup on the next possession and Alvernia had its first lead at 54-52 since a 5-4 edge in the early going.
The teams traded the lead over the final eight minutes of regulation. Andrefski hit a clutch, corner 3 with 2:16 to go that gave Alvernia a 72-70 lead and
Ann Walker had a steal and a layup for a 74-72 lead with 14 seconds left. Misericordia's Lauren Smicherko hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to tie the score at 74-all, and Yoh drove the lane and drew defenders to set up the Andrefski 3-point attempt where the freshman was fouled on the follow through.
Misericordia got a game-high 26 from Smicherko.
Alvernia is off for two weeks and will face Meredith College in the opener of the Emory & Henry Tournament on December 29.
