Ryan Sheekey (Scotch Plains, N.J./Roselle Catholic) had a strong outing in his second start of the season going eight innings allowing three runs on eight hits with five stikeouts helping Alvernia University (12-5, 6-1) to a 10-3 win over Widener University (10-7, 4-3) Thursday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball at Widener.
The Crusaders scored in seven of the nine innings taking a 5-0 lead in with 3-run third inning. The bottom three batters in the order
Rory Clemens (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic),
Dustin Arnold (Annville, Pa./Lebanon Catholic), and
Dustin Stuck (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) each had an RBI-hit in the frame.
Alvernia took a 7-0 with two more runs in the top of the fourth before the Pride got on the board with two runs in the home half of the fourth.
Sheekey scattered the eight hits working around baserunners in each inning but the sixth. He used ground ball double plays to erase runners in the third and the eighth then closed his final inning of work with his fifth strikeout of the day.
Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and an RBI at the top of the lineup.Â
Jason Clapper (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs and Arnold and Stuck had two hits apiece.
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) worked around a pair of fielding errors for a scoreless ninth.
The two teams are scheduled to finish the 3-game series with a doubleheader in Reading on Saturday.
