Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2014) - Bluffton University (3-4) scored six runs over the final four innings in a 7-4 win over Alvernia University (0-1) Friday evening in non-conference baseball at Terry Park.
The Beavers got on the board in the fourth with an unearned run off Alvernia starter
Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser). Bluffton's leadoff hitter in the inning reached on an error and moved to third on a one-out single, the first base hit allowed by Weinhold. The Crusaders got a ground ball up the middle and got the out at second allowign the runner to score from third.
Alvernia took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when
Chris Burns (Cherry Hill, N.J./Holy Cross) unloaded a two-run triple scoring
Ben Sawyer (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and
Dan George (Delran, N.J./Delran).
Bluffton tied the game on the sixth scoring a run without a hit. Weinhold walked two and turned the ball over to
Steve Price (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) with one out. Price walked the bases loaded and the Beavers scored on a passed ball.
Bluffton took the lead with a run in the seventh then tacked on with two each in the eighth and ninth.
The Crusaders made some noise in the bottom of the ninth getting the first two runners on with no one out. Santio Altieri (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) delivered a run with a one-out double, and
Jason Clapper (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) drive a pinch-hit single to right to bring in another run.
That brought the tying run to the plate and brought the Bluffton closer in out of the pen for back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Alvernia continues the spring break schedule facing Heidelberg on Saturday.
