Rowan Takes 10-7 Win Over Alvernia

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2014) - Rowan University (19-7) scored four runs in the fourth for a 6-1 lead and held off a late rally from Alvernia University (20-8) in a 10-7 win Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

The Profs scored four times on just two hits, but the Crusaders committed two costly errors in the fourth inning.  The Crusaders in turn benefited from a Rowan error in the bottom of the fourth and plated two runs to cut the lead to 6-3.

The score was 9-3 after Rowan scored twice in the seventh inning and Alvernia threatened in the eighth.  Chris Burns (Cherry Hill, N.J./Holy Cross) drove in the first run of the inning and Santino Alteri (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculata Heart Central) forced in another with a bases-loaded walk.  Brok Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) singled through the left side to drive in another run and the Crusaders moved the potential tying run into scoring position with no one out.

Rowan reliever Carlos Ruiz got a pitcher's best friend, the comebacker 1-2-3 double play ball, but the Crusaders still had runners at second and third with one out.  Ruiz was able to end the threat getting Matt Patterson (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) to fly out to end the inning.

Rowan added a run in the top of the ninth for the 10-7 final.

Burns finished the day with two hits and two RBIs.  Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) and Jason Clapper (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) both had two hits and two runs scored.

Alvernia--which has played six games in the last five days--will play again on Monday in a non-conference game at Rutgers-Newark.
