BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (Apr. 19,2014) - Albright College (10-14, 8-10) swept a baseball doubleheader from Alvernia University (21-10, 12-6) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Kerchner Field.
Albright scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth in game won for a 5-4 win then got a 5-hit shutout in game two.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the opener on
Matt Patterson's (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) first home run of the season and moved ahead 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI-single from
Joe Iacobellis (Morganville, N.J./Red Bank Catholic).

Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) worked around baserunners in four of the first five innngs then allowed back-to-back singles followed by consecutive walks to force in Albright's first run. The Crusaders went to the pen for closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) who was greated with a run-scoring single. A sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run and the Lions tacked on two more for a 5-2 lead after six.
Alvernia put the first two on in the top of the seventh when
Chris Burns (Cherry Hill, N.J./Holy Cross) was hit by a pitch and pinch hitter
Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) doubled. The Crusaders scored when
Brok Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) reached on an error and
Richie Ricciardi (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) singled in the fourth run. Albright was then able to get the final out when Patterson hit a comebacker with the potential tying run at third.
In the second game, Daniel Louviaux scattered five hits with two walks for a complete game shutout. Alvernia had runners on in five of the seven innings, but couldn't push across a run. Albright scored once in the third and two more in the fourth.
Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) went 2-for-3 in the opener and Patterson collected two hits in game two.
Alvernia is scheduled to face Manhattanville and Moravian this week in non-conference games before closing the conference schedule next weekend with a 3-game series vs Arcadia. The Crusaders have locked up a spot in the postseason championship. One win would lock up at least the No. 2 seed. They need at least one loss from Widener against Messiah to have a shot at the top seed.
