Crusaders Beat Etown, 4-1 In Series Opener

Benusis Pitches Into The Seventh In Second Straight Strong Outing

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 5, 2014) - Three different players collected two hits and an RBI for Alvernia University (15-5, 8-2) and senior Aaron Benusis (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) gave up one earned run over six and a third innings to lead the Crusaders to a 4-1 win over Elizabethtown College (9-9, 3-5) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Chris Burns (Cherry Hill, N.J./Holy Cross) went 2-for-3 and both Matt Patterson (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) and Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Tyler Weary reached on an error for the Blue Jays in the top of the fourth, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a passed ball, then scored on a single by Luke Gatti.  In the bottom of the frame, Alvernia got the run back when Gehris doubled to lead off, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sac fly from Rory Clemens (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic).

The Crusaders took the lead in the fifth after Benusis set down the Jays in order in the top of the inning.  Dustin Stuck (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) singled to start the inning, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on a groudout and scored on Patterson's two-out single to right.

Alvernia tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth scoring on a Gehris double and a Burns sac fly.

Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.

Alvernia and Etown are scheduled to finish the 3-game series with a doubleheader Sunday at Etown.
