Williamsport, Pa. (Jan. 24, 2015) - Lycoming College (12-6, 7-2) shot 55 precent from the floor and knocked down 5-of-8 shots from behind the 3-point arc in an 85-66 win over Alvernia University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Lamade Gymnasium.
The Warriors remain in first place in the Commonwealth Conference a game up on Stevenson and Arcadia. Alvernia and Hood both fall another game of the pace and are two-back of the top spot tied for third at 5-4 with Lebanon Valley at 4-5.
The 3-point basket was the shot of choice early the teams combining for five 3s in the opening nine minutes, and Lycoming holdin a 12-9 advantage.
The Warriors then turned their focus on the inside over the next four minutes getting three layups in an 8-2 run that gave them a 20-11 lead with under seven minutes left in the first half. The lead hit 13 points, 31-18, on a 3 from Patrick Dougher, and Lycoming settled for a 37-28 lead at the halftime break.
The second-half lead was down to seven points, 46-39, when
Charles Cooper knocked down one of his six 3s on the night, but the Warriors scored on four straight free throws to ignite a 13-1 run that built a comfortable 19-point lead, 59-40 with 12:10 left in the game.
The Crusaders went 0-for-3 from the floor and committed three turnovers during the run while the Warriors produced points on nearly every possession.
The lead was double digits the rest of the way for the Warriors.
Cooper finished with a game-high 26 points.Â
Mike Miller scored 15 points on the strength of 9-for-12 from the free throw line and
Lamont Clark score 11. Lycoming put four players in double figures led by 16 points from Nykolas King.
Alvernia returns home to host Arcadia in an important Commonwealth match-up on Wednesday.
