Frederick, Md. (Oct. 21, 2015) - Johnna Shank netted her seventh of the season to give Alvernia University (4-11-1, 2-3) a 1-0 victory over Hood College (4-11, 0-5) Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth action.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders posted their lone goal just under a minute into the second half. 43-seconds into the half, Alvernia collected its third corner opportunity on the day. While the Crusaders did not initially connect on the
Bailey Stover input, Shank stuck with a loose ball out in front of the net and drove in the header for the 1-0 advantage.
Hood made five efforts at the equalizer in the remaining 44 minutes, but a wide shot and four saves by goalkeeper
Jessica Plunkett kept the Blazers off the board.
The Crusaders tripled their scoring opportunities from half to half, ripping 9 shots in the second half and 12 across the game.
Alvernia put seven shots on goal, with Shank notching three,
Hannah Mallets shooting two, and
Kayla McNamee and
Eden Nafziger each taking one.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, continuing conference play with a home matchup against Stevenson at 4:00 pm.
