Florham, N.J. (Oct. 3, 3015) - Alvernia University (9-11) split a pair of matches at the MAC Women's Volleyball Crossover Saturday afternoon hosted by FDU-Florham.
The Crusaders dropped the first match of the morning, 3-1, to FDU then bounced back to defeat Manhattanville by a 3-1 final.
In the opener, Alvernia earned a 27-25 win in the first set to take a 1-0 lead, but the Devils answered with wins of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-22 to take the match. Freshman
Emily Smith led the Crusaders with 15 kills in the opener while Laura Wachowica and Kirsten Sipling added 13 each.
In the second match, the Crusaders once again won the opening set by a 27-25 count. Manhattanville answered with a 25-15 win to level the match, but Alvernia was able to respond with an equally convincing 25-15 win of its own. The Crusaders then closed the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Smith and Wachowicz both led the way with 14 kills apiece in the second match.
Alvernia will travel to Washington College for a non-conference match on Thursday.
