Crusaders Break Free Throw Records In 88-73 Win Over PSU-Brandywine

Miller Scores Career-High 26

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 14, 2015) – Sophomore Mike Miller and senior Charles Cooper both surpassed 20 points and Alvernia University (2-0) set single game records for free throws made and attempted in an 88-73 win over Penn State-Brandywine (0-1) Saturday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

Mike Miller went 16-for-18 from the free throw line and scored a career-high 26 points.  Charles Cooper hit 11-of-13 free throws and finished with 21 points, and Alex Shippen hit 9-of-13 free throws and finished with 19 points.  The Crusaders went 46-for-60 from the line breaking the previous mark for makes (36 at Beaver on January 31, 1998) and attempts (51 at Delaware Valley on November 20, 2012).

Alvernia built a 13-point lead by halftime and held the lead above 13 until the final 90 seconds of the game.

Shippen opened the game with a 3 for the Crusaders nine seconds after the tip and Alvernia ran off an 8-0 run to start the game.  George Sapp hit a free throw, Adam Seigrist hit a jumper in the paint and Miller knocked down a jumper of his own.

Brandywine started the game 0-for-7 from the floor with a pair of turnovers.

The Lions finally got the offense going and put together an 8-3 run to cut the gap to three points, 11-8 with 12:11 left in the first half.  Miller stopped that run with a 3 assisted by Cooper, and Cooper scored on the break two minutes later to push the Alvernia lead to double digits for the first time, 21-10.

Brandywine was able to cut that down to six points twice, but Alvernia scored the last five points of the half—capped by a 3 from Shippen—to take a 40-27 lead at the break.

Alvernia pushed the lead over 20 points on a Seigrist layup with 13 minutes left.

Miller hit a floater in the lane with 7:17 to go that put the hosts up 67-49.  It was the last field goal of the night for the Crusaders who went to the line 23 times over the final seven minutes.

Amir Johnson led the Lions with 24 points.

Alvernia continues the non-conference schedule hosting Immaculata on Wednesday.
