Shippen's 25 Carries Alvernia Past Berks, 78-72

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 24, 2015) - Sophomore guard Alex Shippen scored a game-high 25 points--including four late free throws to ice the game--as Alvernia University (4-3) defeated Penn State-Berks (0-3) by a 78-72 final Tuesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Berks.

Berks senior Christian Burggraf hit a 3 with 36 seconds left to pull the Lions within two, 74-72, and Shippen answered hitting a pair from the line with 29 ticks left.  The Lions were off the mark on a 3 on the following possession and Shippen collected the rebound and finished the scoring with two more free throws.

Berks help a nine point lead early in the second half, but Alvernia battled back to tie the game at 54-all and took the lead on a pair of free throws from sophomore Mike Miller with 7:39 left to play.

Miller and George Sapp scored 17 points apiece and freshman reserve Anthony Hedgepeth hit 3-of-5 from the arc and scored 11 points.  Berks got a team-best 21 from Burggraf.

Alvernia is off for the Thanksgiving break and will return to action next Wednesday when it opens the MAC Commonwealth schedule at Lycoming.
