Williamsport, Pa. (Dec. 2, 2015) – Lycoming University (4-3, 1-0) shot 75% from the line in a 63-48 victory over Alvernia University (3-3, 0-1) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth action at Lycoming.
The Crusaders opened strong, exchanging buckets with the Warriors through the first seven minutes.
Tied 10-10, Lycoming netted a jumper and a pair of layups for the six point advantage.
Kim Whelan drained a 3 to cut the lead 16-13. After a drive to the basket by Lycoming,
Jenna Wolff responded with a drive of her own and converted on the 3 point play opportunity to bring the Crusaders within two.
The Warriors scored just before the end of the first quarter, and continued a ten point run through the second quarter to put up a 28-16 margin.
Morgan Downs broke the run with a jumper, and
Kim Whelan followed with a layup to shorten the gap 28-20.
Lycoming outscored Alvernia 5-2 in the final minute to take the 33-22 lead into the half.
The Crusaders played the Warriors tough through the third quarter, with Lycoming holding a slight 14-12 advantage in points.
Chelsea Ebersole was a key contributor for the Crusaders, collecting 8 points in the third with a free throw, a layup, a jumper, and a 3.
Despite Alvernia's answers to each Lycoming shot, the Warrior netted the last shot of the quarter to take a 47-34 advantage into the final quarter.
The final quarter followed suit with the third with Alvernia collecting 14 points, just two shy of Lycoming's 16. Wolff picked up six of the points in the fourth quarter, while
Miranda Hoover added three as the Crusaders fell 63-48.
Whelan and Wolff led the scoring for Alvernia, putting away nine points each.
Tyra Roberts had 10 boards for the Crusaders, while Hoover had nine.
Alvernia will have a short break over the next week due to finals. The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, December 12, traveling to Messiah for Commonwealth Conference play. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
