Daytona Beach, Fl. (Dec. 21, 2015) - Alvernia University (5-5) settled for the split in Daytona, falling 67-51 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (10-1) in its second game of the Daytona Beach Tournament held Monday morning.
The Crusaders opened the contest with a quick 5-0 lead as
Jenna Wolff started the scoring from beyond the arc and
Miranda Hoover tacked on a layup in the first minute. WPI quickly responded, putting together a 12-point run for the 12-5 advantage.Back-to-back 3's by
Olivia Andrefski and
Stevie Fortna halted the Engineers' momentum and brought Alvernia within one. WPI managed a pair of layups to reopen its margin to 5, but Wolff ended the quarter with a layup to make it 16-13.
The Engineers hit their stride to open the second, holding a 24-13 advantage with 6:30 left until the half.
Logan Focht led the Crusaders to chip away at the lead, making the most of a foul on a 3 to cut the lead 24-16. Locht was not finished though, pairing layups with Andrefski and then putting away the 3 to come within four at 26-22. WPI refused to let the Crusaders closer, taking a 9-point margin into the half.
Down 40-26 in the third quarter, Alvernia put up a 10-point run to bridge the gap 40-36. Wolff continued to spark the offense, collecting eight points on a layup and a pair of 3s.
Katie Schickling closed out the run, making a jumper from the paint.
WPI, who reestablished a 52-42 turning into the final quarter, outshot the Crusaders 15-9 in the final frame to capture the 67-51 victory. Wolff, Fortna, and
Chelsea Ebersole provided points for Alvernia in the fourth.
Wolff picked up 15 points on the day, while Fortna added 10. Ebersole led Alvernia in rebounds with five.
The Crusaders will take to the court again on December 30th, hosting Penn State Harrisburg for a 7:00 tip off.
