Hood Wins Wild One, 66-64, Over Alvernia

Cooper Leads Crusaders With 21

Frederick, Md. (Feb. 7, 2015) - Hood College (10-11, 6-6 CC) scored the final five points of the game and withstood two 3-point attempts from Alvernia University (11-9, 6-6) in a 66-64 win Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at BB&T Arena.

The Crusaders went up 64-61 on a pair of free throws from Lamont Clark with just over two minutes to play.  Hood answered with a jumper from Davon Hill on the next possession.  Hill hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:09 to play to force the 11th tie of the game at 63-all, and Reggie Daniels' free throws with 57 seconds to go were the final points.

Chuck Cooper was off the mark on a 3-point attempt with 32 seconds to go, but the Crusaders got the offensive rebound.  Alvernia called timeout with 16 seconds left and Cooper and Mike Miller both had looks from the arc in the final six seconds, but couldn't connect.

Alvernia falls into a tie with Hood in fourth place--but the Blazers hold the tie-breaker on the strength of a season series sweep.  Lebanon Valley sits a half game back in sixth position, Albright a half game behind that, and Messiah a half game behind Albright.  The top five teams make the postseason which begins with the 4/5 first round game on Monday, Feb. 23.

Lycoming dropped a 71-55 decision at Albright on Saturday, but still remains in first place.  Stevenson won in overtime at Messiah to remain a half game out of first, and Arcadia sits in third two games behind Stevenson and a game up on Alvernia.

Hood held a 19-11 lead over Alvernia midway through the first half, but saw the Crusaders storm back with nine straight points fueled by a dunk from senior center Harrison Deyo.  Cooper hit a 3 and had five points on the run.

Neither team led by more than three points for the rest of the half and the teams hit the break tied at 32-all.  The Crusaders had some strategy to work out with Deyo having picked up his third foul of the game with five minutes still left in the first half.

Cooper provided the offense in the first two-plus minutes of the second half knocking down a pair of 3s as the Crusaders opened up a 42-34 lead.

Hood erased that deficit and took a 51-49 lead and once again the game remained within one possession for a stretch until Deyo hit a free throw to put Alvernia up 61-57 with three minutes left to play.

Deyo picked up his fifth foul a minute later with the Crusaders holding a 62-59 lead joining fellow front court starter Kirby Turner on the bench with five fouls.

Hood trimmed the gap to 62-61 after Deyo fouled out, but Alvernia answered on the free throws from Clark for the 64-61 score.

Clark finished with 12 points and a game and career-high 15 rebounds.  He pulled within six points of 1,000 for his career.  Deyo finished with 11 points.  Hood got 15 points each from Hill and Chris Cook.

Alvernia returns home for an important match-up with Stevenson on Wednesday.
