Frederick, Md. (Feb. 7, 2015) - Alvernia University (7-14, 3-9) saw a 7-point lead dwindle down to one in the final minutes, but hit enough free throws down the stretch for a 58-56 win over Hood College (4-17, 2-10) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at BB&T Arena.
The Crusaders scored 10 straight points for a 55-48 lead with just under five minutes to play, but saw the Blazers answer with six straight to pull within one, 55-54, with 1:18 to go.Â
Kaitlyn Yoh hit two free throws with 51 seconds left and
Mya Lobb added another with five seconds to go as the Crusaders held on to avenge an earlier-season loss to the Blazers.
Tyra Roberts carried the Crusaders with 15 points and 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. Lobb finished with 13 points and
Chelsea Ebersole added 10. Hood got a game-high 17 points from Alexis Andrukat.
Alvernia built a 13-point lead midway through the first half, 20-7, but that lead completely vanished by halftime with Hood closing the half on a 19-3 run to take a 26-23 lead at the break.
Hood held a 6-point lead early in the second half, but a 3 from Ebersole started a quick 8-2 run that tied the game at 36-all.Â
Later in the half, Roberts scored five straight points to start the 10-0 run that put Alvernia up 55-48.
The Crusaders return home to host Stevenson on Wednesday.
