Ryan Sheekey went five and third innings and junior catcher
Chris Burns drove in three runs to lead Alvernia University (8-4, 1-0) to a 9-4 win over Stevenson University (0-5-1, 0-1) Friday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Stevenson.
Sheekey gave up three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and left with runners at the corners and one out in a 5-2 game in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Matt Osgoodby allowed a run to score on a sac fly, but got out of the inning with a comebacker to the mound.
Stevenson got a run off Osgoodby in the seventh to pull within a run at 5-4, but the Crusaders scored a run in the eighth and three more in the ninth for a comfortable margin. Senior closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto earned his second straight six-out save coming into a two-run game in the eighth before the offense provided extra cushion in the ninth.
Burns went 2-for-5 with a run-scoring single in the fourth and a two-run double in the ninth.Â
Cameron Coons and
Brok Martin put up identical lines both going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The teams finish the 3-game series with a doubleheader rescheduled for Tuesday at the In The Net facility in Palmyra. Game one starts at noon.
