Chestertown, Md (Mar. 23, 2015) - Alvernia University (6-4) recorded two shutouts wins, defeating Washington College on the road 2-0 and 4-0 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.
The Crusaders, who were held scoreless through seven in game one, finally got on the board in the top of extra innings. In the eighth, Alvernia put a runner on second due to international tiebreaker rule. With
Felicia McKenna on base,
Amanda Turner launched a line drive over the center field fence to take the 2-0 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning,
Brianna Fisher shut down the Shorewomen in order to seal the win.
In game one, Alvernia had several chances to plate runs in regulation. In the second, the Crusaders were unable to convert with runners on first and second after a double to left by
Aly Shilling. Alvernia also left two on in the fifth after McKenzie Miessau led off the inning with a walk and McKenna moved her to second on a single to right. The Crusaders also had a shot in the top of the seventh, stranding two despite a leadoff single to right center by
Brianna Kuhn and a follow-up walk by
Brianna DePriest.
Fisher picked up the win for the Crusaders, allowing just two hits and two walks in eight innings of work.
In game two, Alvernia got to work early, taking the 1-0 advantage in the second. After leading off the inning with a single to left, Shilling was plated on a bad relay throw from the outfield off a down the line double by Miessau.
The Crusaders continued to cross the plate in the third, building on their lead.
Bernadette Carey started the inning with an infield single and would come around to score on a series of errors by the Shorewomen on a DePriest bunt. After advancing to third on the error, DePriest would take on another run from an RBI double by McKenna. McKenna would move up to third on a passed ball and would give the Crusaders the 4-0 advantage as she crossed the plate on a successful squeeze bunt by
Shannon Grim.
Four runs would be more than enough for Alvernia as
Taylor Fouracre shut down the Shorewomen offensively, giving up just three hits through seven innings.
Alvernia takes to the field again on Tuesday, traveling to Penn State Berks to continue non-conference play. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
