Reading, Pa. (Mar. 25, 2015) - The College of New Jersey (6-5) took advantage of extra outs in a 3-0 win over Alvernia University (10-6) Wednesday afternoon in non-conferene baseball action at Angelica Park.
The Crusaders made five errors on the day while the Lions played a clean nine innings behind Evan Edelman who went the distance scattering seven hits with five strikeouts.
TCNJ scored a run in the first on two walks, a balk, and a sacrifice fly, then scored twice in the seventh on a pair of bunts, an error and another balk.
Alvernia threatened in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but couldn't push a run across.Â
In the eighth,
Chris Burns was running from first on the pitch to Cam Coons who ripped the 3-1 offering down the third base line. TCNJ third baseman Michael Murray made a leaping snag of the line drive and easily doubled Burns off first to kill the threat.
In the ninth,
Ethan Francis ripped a two-out, pinch hit single to center and
Ben Dubas followed with his third base hit of the day to bring the potential tying run to the plate. Senior short stop
Richie Ricciardi worked the count to 3-1 before lifting a fly ball to left for the final out of the game.
After two walks and the balk in the first inning, freshman
Kevin Short settled in well to finish a six-inning outing giving up just one run on two hits.Â
Craig Mellinger gave up two runs over two innings of work and
Matt Osgoodby pitched a scoreless ninth.
Dubas had the only multi-hit game for the Crusaders.
Alvernia takes a day off on Thursday before continuing a stretch of nine games in six days on Friday hosting Widener University to start a 3-game weekend series.
