Reading, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2015) - Alvernia University (21-8, 12-3) scored seven runs in the home half of the second inning on its way to an 18-6 win over Lebanon Valley College (8-15, 3-10) Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
The Dutchmen scored six in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead, but LVC starter Thomas Mattaini pulled the cardinal sin and walked the leadoff man for the Crusaders in the next half inning and that opened the floodgates.
Vinny Case doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to drive home the fist two runs, and
Joe Iacobellis followed with an RBI groundout.Â
Mike Cunningham and
Ben Sawyer ripped consecutive two-out doubles to drive in a run each and
Chris Burns delivered a 2-run homer to put the Crusaders back on top, 8-6.
Alvernia tacked on four more runs in the third inning on an Iacobellis sacrifice fly and a 3-run homer from Sawyer. The Crusaders scored single runs in the fourth and the eighth innings and posted another four in the home half of the sixth fueled by a bases-clearing double from Sawyer.
Sawyer finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and eight RBIs. His eight home runs this season are the most for the Crusaders since Travis Wramble hit eight in 2011.
Antonio Baglivo went a solid 6.1 innings in relief to pick up the win. He gave up six hits with five strikeouts and kept the Dutchmen off the board following the 6-run second.Â
Tim Carfrey struck out the side in the ninth around a base hit to close the game.
The Crusaders continue the schedule at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday.
