Reading, Pa (Apr. 14, 2015) - Alvernia University (13-9) picked up 26 hits across two games en route to 5-2 and 12-4 wins over Penn State Harrisburg (12-14) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Angelica Park.
In game one, Penn State took the 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Alvernia answered an inning later, tying the game 1-1. After
Mckenzie Miessau opened the bottom of the inning with a triple, she was plated by an RBI single by
Stephanie Mancuso.
PSU and Alvernia would exchange runs in the second, uping the score to 2-2. The Crusaders started their half of the inning like the inning prior, this time with the triple coming from
Shannon Grim. Miessau would collect the RBI on a groundout to short.
The Crusaders sealed the win in the sixth, using the long ball to take the lead and add insurance.
Amanda Turner gave Alvernia the 3-2 lead on a solo shot to center. Mancuso put another runner on for Alvernia on a walk, and came across to score on a homer by
Felicia McKenna for the 5-2 margin.
Taylor Fouracre tossed the win in the circle, allowing just seven hits in the complete game effort.
In the nightcap, Penn State was on the board first again, this time pulling ahead 4-0 in the first inning. The Crusaders settled in during the second, switching leads with the Lions. In an inning full of offense,
Aly Shilling gave the Crusaders their first runner after opening the inning with a double. Turner cut the deficit to 4-2, launching her second homer of the day.
With two outs,
Brianna Kuhn extended the inning with a single up the middle.
Bernadette Carey gave Alvernia another runner with a single of her own, and
Brianna DePriest loaded the bases after drawing a walk. McKenna took advantage of the opportunity, plating two on a single to tie the game 4-4. Grim followed McKenna with a double, crossing DePriest to take the lead 5-4. Batting through the lineup, Shilling took the box again, this time picking up two RBIs on a single. Miessau added a single of her own, stretching out the Crusader lead to 8-4.
Alvernia added another run in the fourth with the duo of Grim and Miessau. Grim, would reached on a single to left, put the Crusaders up 9-4 off a double by Miessau.
Alvernia was not done offensively, putting up three more runs in the fifth. Kuhn and Carey put together back-to-back infield singles, and a single by DePriest would push across Kuhn. Carey would score a batter later as McKenna drove a sacrifice fly to center for the 11-4 go ahead. Grim and Shilling would each tack on a single, advancing and score DePriest to capture the run rule and 12-4 victory.
Katy Lutz picked up the win in game two, giving way to just five hits in four innings of work.
The Crusaders return to the diamond again on Thursday, hosting Messiah in Commonwealth Conference action. First pitch is set for 3:30.
