Reading, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2015) - Alvernia University (14-8, 6-3) scored five runs in the third inning of game one on its way to a 6-1 win over Stevenson University (9-10-2, 6-3) only to see the Mustangs come back with two runs in the last inning of the nightcap for a 5-4 win and a split of the Commonwealth Conference baseball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Angelica Park.
Lou Marotta went 3.2 innings in relief in game one and improved to 4-0 on the season. Stevenson's Trevor Fitzsimmons went 3.1 innings in relief in game two and picked up the win when the Mustangs chased across a pair of unearend runs against Alvernia closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto who was looking for career save number 40.
Stevenson scored the first run of the day in the top of the third in game one when Brody Tennant singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Craig Joseph. Alvernia junior
Chris Burns sliced a run-scoring single into right to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third and
Cameron Coons followed crushing an RBI-double to left.Â
Dan George chased home Coons with a single and
Vinny Case ripped a double to the fence in left to plate two more.
The Crusaders tacked on a sixth run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from
Joe Iacobellis.
In game two, both teams traded single runs in the first inning and both scored two each in the third. The Crusaders took a 4-3 lead when Burns reached on a bunt single with
Ben Sawyer on at second after a double. Sawyer moved up to third on the bunt and scored when the Stevenson third baseman threw the ball away.
Alvernia went to Becker-Menditto in the top of the seventh looking for the save. He hit the first batter of the inning on a 2-0 pitch then the second batter reached on a fielding error. Stevenson bunted the tying and go-ahead runners up to 3rd and 2nd with one out. Becker-Menditto temporarily stranded the runners with a pop up back to the pitcher, but Kevin Kopas delivered with a two-out, two-run single to left.
Alvernia went in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Coons had base hits in each of his first two at-bats of game one to increase his hit streak to nine straight at-bats then struck out swinging to end the run.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule Saturday at Hood College.
