Bats Lead Crusaders Back To Win Column, 8-5 At Arcadia

Becker-Menditto Picks Up Save Number 44

Glenside, Pa. (Apr. 24, 2015) - The Alvernia University (27-10, 16-3) offense racked up 17 base hits and the Crusaders broke a two-game losing skid with an 8-5 win over Arcadia University (16-11-1, 11-8) Friday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Arcadia.

Senior closer Kevin Becker-Menditto earned his 13th save of the season and 44th of his career pulling within two of the NCAA Division III career record.

Fellow senior Richie Ricciardi batted leadoff and responded with his first 3-hit game of the season going 3-for-6.  Freshman Ben Dubas went 3-for-4 in the two hole, and Zach Nadolny was the third player in the lineup to rack up three base hits going 3-for-5

Arcadia opened the scoring against Alvernia starter Ryan Sheekey in the bottom of the first with a double and single.  The Crusaders quickly took back the lead when Ricciardi ripped a 2-run double to left center.

Arcadia tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the second.

Alvernia pushed ahead with a run in the fourth then added another in the fifth.  Ben Sawyer had an RBI-single in the sixth and Chris Burns followed with a 2-run single for a 7-3 lead.

The Crusaders scored in the fourth straight inning pushing across a run on a Dubas double in the seventh for an 8-4 lead and the Knights scored in the bottom of the eighth to cut the gap back to 8-5.

Alvernia turned the ball over to Becker-Menditto in the ninth and he worked around one error to keep the Knights off the board and close the game.

Sheekey went six innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.  Louis Marotta went two innings and gave up a run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Alvernia has already locked up the top seed in the Commonwealth Championships with two games to go.  The Crusaders will host the event April 30 - May 2 at Santander Stadium in York.  Widener sits in second place at 12-7 in conference with Arcadia, Stevenson, and Messiah all tied for third at 11-8.  Only the top four teams make the postseason.

Alvernia and Arcadia will wrap up their 3-game series Saturday at Alvernia.
