Reading, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2015) - Alvernia University (7-8, 3-5) picked up an 11-8 victory over Lycoming College (10-6, 2-6) in the last Commonwealth and regular season game Saturday afternoon on Alvernia's Turf Field.
The Crusaders outscored the Warriors 7-4 in the first half in route to the win.
Alvernia opened the contest with a 3-0 run, put together by unassisted goals by
Abby McCarthy,
Candace Knight, and
Angel Adams.
The Warriors shortened the gap 3-2, but
Jacquelyn Strange netted her 32nd of the year to extend the Crusader lead 4-2. Lycoming would come back to tie things 4-4, but Alvernia would have the last say in the half.
The Crusaders ended the first in the same fashion as it started, notching three unanswered goals to take the 7-4 lead into the half. McCarthy put Alvernia up 5-4, and Strange netted two more in the final minute of the half.
Both teams found the net four times in the second half. The teams exchanged two goals through the first twenty minutes of the half as McCarthy struck again, this time with
Julie Sutton, to maintain a 9-5 margin.
McCarthy was not done though, notching one more at the eight minute mark to extend the lead 10-6.
Brooke Campione gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the day with five minutes left to play, using her goal to lift Alvernia ahead 11-6.
The Warriors would score two more before the end of the game, but were unable to catch up to the Crusaders.
Colleen Reilly collected the win in goal for the Crusaders, picking up 10 saves in 60 minutes of work.
Alvernia completed its regular season schedule in a three-way tie for the #5-seed in the Commonwealth Conference tournament. The Crusaders fell just short of the playoffs, being eliminated by way to tie-breaker rules.
The Crusaders will wait to see if they receive a nod to the ECAC tournament.
