Reading, Pa. (Apr. 8, 2015) - Alvernia University (18-8) scored nine runs in the second inning, but needed to survive an 8-run seventh from Haverford College (5-14) in a 19-17 win Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Cameron Coons went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs, and
Dan George went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs.
Haverford opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first and Alvernia sent 13 batters to the plate in the second and scored nine runs capped by a 3-run homer from Coons.
Haverford scored the next six runs over the game over two innings to pull within a pair, but the Crusaders hung crooked numbers on the board in the home half of the third and fourth to go up 18-7.
They entered the seventh inning with darkness looming and a 19-9 lead. Haverford scored six runs to pull within four and the Crusaders went to closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto with the tying run on deck and two outs in the inning.
Haverford pushed across one more run on a fielding error and another on a double to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Becker-Menditto locked down his ninth save of the season with a strikeout, and the game was halted for darkness.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule Friday hosting Lebanon Valley College in the first game of the 3-game series.
