Fourth-Seeded Widener Advances To Championship Final, 8-6 Over Stevenson

York, Pa. (May 1, 2015) - Fourth-seeded Widener University (22-17) defeated Stevenson University (20-19-2) 8-6 in a close contest after getting two runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Pride will face top-seeded Alvernia University in the championship game at noon on Saturday in York.
 
Widener took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. The Pride got the first run of the inning off a Justin Healey double. The Pride got another run off of a John Petrongolo single.
 
Widener got off to an early start in the game by getting two runs in the top of the first inning. The Pride got RBIs from Matt Scherer and Justin Healey. The Pride widened the lead in the top of the second inning on a throwing error by the Mustangs' shortstop.  
 
Stevenson got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mustangs' first hit of the game came from a Troy Miller double down the left field side. The Mustangs got their first run of the game on a Craig Joseph single that plated Ian Eberly with one out in the sixth.
 
Matt Guarino started the game strong for the Pride. Guarino pitched five hitless innings to start the game. It started to get away from Guarino in the bottom of the seventh when he allowed five runs, three unearned. Guarino left the game while it was tied 5-5. Josh Laferty got the win for the pride, pitching two and two third scoreless innings. 
 
The Pride will face Alvernia on Saturday at noon. It is a double elimination format so the Pride will have to win two in a row to win the title.
