Stevenson Pushes Past Alvernia, 73-58

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2016) - Stevenson University (7-6, 4-3) paired a 48% shooting effort with solid defense to capture a 73-58 victory over Alvernia University (7-9, 2-5) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back.

Down 17-6 at the start of the second quarter, the Crusaders picked up a pair of buckets from Tyra Roberts and layup from Stevie Fortna to balance out Mustang shots and stay within 11 with five minutes left until the half. Stevenson increased its lead to 28-12, but Jenna Wolff drained eight points in four minutes to cancel out the Mustangs offense.  Chelse Ebersole tacked on a 3 right before the buzzer to cut the deficit 37-25 at halftime.

The Crusaders produced their best offensive quarter in the third, going toe-to-toe with the Mustangs as each team notched 20 points. Alvernia was 3-6 in the quarter on 3s as Fortna, Wolff and Logan Focht all contributed.

Alvernia came within nine at 59-50 to start the fourth quarter, but Stevenson put together an eight point run to solidify the win.

The Mustangs defense proved to be a difference maker in the contest, collecting 13 steals and forcing 22 turnovers.

The Crusaders were led by Wolff with 17 points. Roberts was just behind her with 15, while Fortna added 9.

Stevenson put four players into double-digit scoring, with Caitlin Roy and Kameron Ward each netting 14.

Alvernia takes to the road on Wednesday, facing MAC Commonwealth and cross-town rival Albright at 6:00 p.m.
