Reading, Pa. (Jan. 27, 2016) – Lycoming College (11-7, 6-3) used consistent play to capture a 64-52 victory over Alvernia University (7-12, 2-8) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
Lycoming jumped out to an early lead, pulling ahead 15-6 through the first six minutes. Sparked by
Jenna Wolff, the Crusaders put together an 8 point run to come within one. After Wolff put away a pair of jumpers, Fortna mirrored her with four point of her own to bridge the gap 15-14.
The Warrior managed to tack on a layup and a 3 before the end of the quarter to take a 20-14 advantage into the second quarter.
Wolff was a force to be reckoned with in the second period, answering each Lycoming shot with a bucket of her own, knocking down six of Alvernia's eight points through five minutes to maintain a 6 point deficit at 29-23.
Olivia Andrefski added her first 3 of the night to cut the lead 29-26, and the Crusaders answered a Lyco jumper with a
Katie Schickling free throw to enter the half just trailing the Warriors by four, 31-27.
Lycoming opened the second half in the same fashion as the first, extending its lead 39-29. Alvernia mustered up another rally though, closing the gap to two. After bucket exchanges worked the score to 43-34,
Chelsea Ebersole connected a jumper before
Miranda Hoover netted a pair from the line. Andrefski then delivered another 3 to shorten the margin 43-41.
The Warriors kept the Crusaders at bay, reestablishing a five point difference before the end of the quarter.
Ahead 49-44 entering the final ten minutes, Lycoming worked at its lead, outscoring the Crusaders by seven to claim a 64-52 final.
Wolff guided the scoring for Alvernia with 21 points, shooting 9-14 from the field. Hoover notched the first double-double of her career, collecting 10 points with 11 boards.
Morgan Downs pulled down a season-high tying 8 rebounds.
Lycoming posted four players in double-digit scoring, with Shelby Mueller and Chelsea Henderson each picking up 14 points.
Alvernia continues its conference schedule on Saturday, hosting Messiah College for its Pink Day game at 1:00 pm.
