Margaret Wentzel became the Crusaders' All-Time Career Points leader as No.15 Alvernia University (16-0, 5-0) claimed a 4-1 victory over Widener University (6-8, 1-4) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action at Widener University.
Wentzel tied the previous record of 216, set by Becky Maccione '06, with 1:30 left in the first half. Wentzel pushed the set up
Malorie McCoy, who drained her ninth of the season to give the Crusaders the 1-0 advantage.
Alvernia extended its lead in the 50
th minute as Wentzel picked up her historic 217
th point with an assist to
Alexis Krall, who netted her first of the evening.
Widener cut the lead in half seven minutes later, but the Crusaders responded with a pair of goals in a three minute span.
Andrea Zimmerman tacked on the insurance goal for Alvernia, using a feed from McCoy to net her first collegiate goal and put the Crusaders up, 3-1.
Krall increased the margin in the 64
th minute, collecting her 18
th career tally to advance to 23
rd on the career goals list.
Rebecca Brosious collected her 16
th win in goal, recording five saves.
Wentzel, who now sits at the top of the Alvernia charts in career points and assists, is five goals short of claiming the career goals record as well.
With the victory, Alvernia secures its spot in the MAC Commonwealth Conference playoffs, set to begin Wednesday, November 2
nd.
The Crusaders return to their home turf on Saturday, facing their toughest competition of the season as they take on No.1 Messiah College in MAC Commonwealth action.
