Reading, Pa. (Nov. 9, 2016) – #1 Alvernia University (20-2) used a second half goal to capture a 2-1 victory over #4 Washington and Jefferson (15-5) in ECAC quarterfinal field hockey action Wednesday afternoon on Alvernia's Turf Field.
The top-seeded Crusaders took to the board first in the 18
th minute as
Taylor Dorrin sent a long shot towards the goal, which hit off the right post and ricocheted back in front of the net. A scuffle between the two sides resulted in a Crusaders penalty stroke that
Margaret Wentzel drove to the back right corner for the 1-0 go ahead.
Washington and Jefferson responded three minutes later, capitalizing on a corner opportunity and netting the equalizer.
Entering the second half tied 1-1, Alvernia notched the game winner in the 43
rd minute. With Presidents' goalie Karlie Baran out top to contest
Malorie McCoy, McCoy pushed a short pass past Baran to teammate
Andrea Wysocki, who slapped the 2-1 advantage into an open net.
With the win, the Crusaders advance to the semifinal. As the highest remaining seed, Alvernia will host the championship tournament this weekend, including both semifinals on Saturday and the final on Sunday. The Crusaders will open play on Saturday in the first semifinal, taking on the winner of Albright and Muhlenberg at 11:00 a.m. The second semifinal will begin at 2:00 p.m., with the Championship game taking place on Sunday at 12 noon.
