Williamsport, Pa. (Dec. 13, 2016) - Junior Chris Wallace scored a layup with 22 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner as Lycoming College (8-1, 4-0) took an 86-85 win over Alvernia University (5-3, 2-2) Tuesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Lamade Gymnasium.
The win for the Warriors spoiled a career-night for Alvernia senior
Marquis Marshall who tied his career-high with 34 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
The Crusaders had a final chance to take the lead and took a timeout with 16 seconds left, but Marshall, working from the top of the key, dribbled off his foot and Lycoming took possession and was able to dribble out the clock.
Lycoming had an 8-point lead, 56-48, with 14:30 to play, but Marshall and
George Williams combined to score all 11 points for the Crusaders during an 11-3 spurt that tied the game at 59-all.
Neither team led by more than four points over the next 10 minutes until Alvernia sophomore
Reid Hoff knocked down a 3 to put the Crusaders up 78-73 with 4:38 to play. For the night Alvernia hit 19-of-37 from beyond the arc, setting a new standard for both makes and attempts from 3, and shooting better than 50 percent from the arc for the first time this season.
Another 3 from
Steve Pendleton put Alvernia back up five points, 78-73, with 3:26 to go, but the Warriors answered with back-to-back buckets to close within a point. Marshall hit two from the free throw line in exchange for a layup from Nyk King then following a Marshall miss from 3, Lycoming worked the ball into Wallace on the block for the go-ahead bucket.
Mike Miler, Jr. and Pendleton both scored 18 for the Crusaders to join Marshall in double figures. Lycoming had five players in double figures led by Wallace with 19.
Alvernia heads to South Beach to continue the season. The Crusaders will play Buffalo State on Monday in Miami, and follow with a game against Goucher on Tuesday.
