Reading, Pa. (Dec. 17, 2016) – The Gophers' Briana Bull posted 33 points to lead Goucher College (3-6) to a 64-51 victory over Alvernia University (0-9) Saturday evening in non-conference women's basketball action on Jack McCloskey Court.
The Gophers outscored the Crusaders 18-8 in the third quarter, overcoming a 30-23 deficit at the start of the second half to hold a 41-38 margin entering the final ten minutes.
The Crusaders quickly knotted things at 41 as
Abbie Zerbe drained a 3 from the corner. Zerbe struck again when the Gophers pushed the margin 46-43, duplicating her previous shot to keep on the pressure. Goucher was able to extend its lead again, posting six unanswered points for the 52-46 advantage with four minutes left to play.
Maya Cooper halted the Gophers' rhythm, enduring the foul on a drive and putting away the pair from the line, but Goucher quickly responded with a bucket in the paint on the other end.
After a dry spell over the next three minutes, the Crusaders used quick passing to create a lane for Zerbe, who finished on the layup to close the gap 54-50.
Bull kept the hot hand for the Gophers though, converting a 3-point play to regain a 7-point margin. Goucher tacked on seven more points over the final minute.
Alvernia opened the contest strong, pulling ahead 17-7 through the first nine minutes. The Gophers posted a 6-0 run to end the quarter, but Zerbe stopped their momentum from beyond the arc for the 20-13 lead through the start of the second quarter.
Goucher continued to put pressure on Alvernia at 21-17, but
Kiersten Ingram helped the Crusaders maintain their distance, netting 8 of Alvernia's final 9 points before the half.
Abbie Zerbe collected 14 points on the night for the Crusaders, while Ingram and
Liv Andrefski both finished in double digits with 12 and 11, respectively.
Miranda Hoover posted a career-high 15 rebounds.
Bull finished with a double-double for the Gophers with 17 rebounds.
The Crusaders have a quick turn-around, returning on action on Monday as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy for a 7:00 pm start.
