Marquis Marshall recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds leading Alvernia University (7-4) to a 66-57 win over Juniata College (6-4) Thursday evening in game two of the Al Senevitis Memorial Tournament hosted by DeSales University.
The win moves Alvernia head coach
Mike Miller to the top of the list in wins at Alvernia with an overall record of 228-111.  He passed Alvernia Hall of Famer Jack McCloskey who retired with a record of 227-111.
Alvernia shot 48 percent from the floor and hit 6-of-12 3s in the first half on Thursday to open up a 33-19 lead at the break.  Juniata cut the deficit down to two points, 41-39 with 12:06 to play, but a pair of free throws from
George Williams and a 3 from
Alex Shippen pushed the lead back to seven points, and the Crusaders led by three or more the rest of the way.
Shippen led the Crusaders' charge from the arc going 5-for-5 on 3-point attempts--the most 3s without a miss since Ray Strickland went 8-for-8 in a game vs Wesley College on January 24, 2004.
Juniata had the gap down to four points, 61-57 with 57 seconds left, but Alvernia went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to close the game. Â
Shippen finished the game with 19 points and Williams added 11. Â
Reid Hoff went 2-for-3 from the arc with a free throw for seven points and added a game-high five assists. Â Juniata had a pair of players reach double figures led by Marcus Lee who tallied 12.
Alvernia will face tournament host DeSales University in the Championship game Friday at 8:00 p.m.
