Ashland, Va. (Feb. 20, 2016) - RPI (1-0) scored four runs in the top of the seventh on its way to a 6-4 win over Alvernia University (0-2) Saturday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Randolph-Macon.
Alvernia scored two runs in the third on a two-run single off the bat of
Vinny Case, and the Crusaders took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when
Chris Burns ripped a run-scoring single to center.
Freshman
John Catchmark went six innings allowing just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts. He turned the ball over to the bullpen, but the Engineers went right to work in the top of the seventh. The inning started with a walk, a single, and a sacrifice, then after a single and a fielder's choice, the Crusader defense committed an error that extended the inning and back-to-back singles put RPI ahead.
RPI added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, but the Crusaders got that back with one in the home half of the inning. James Bertolloti walked to open the inning, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on the Burns single.
Alvernia is scheduled to travel to Johns Hopkins on Monday, Feb. 29, then continues the schedule in Ft. Myers, Fla, for spring starting the following weekend.
