Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2016) - Alvernia University (6-6) split a baseball doubleheader with Mitchell College (7-1) on the final day of the spring break trip at Terry Park.
Mitchell held Alvernia off the board for six innings in the opener on its way to a 7-2 win and Alvernia came back for the split in game two behind freshman
Thomas Malik.
Nathan Sides went 3-for-4 in game one with an RBI.Â
Jon Strouse and Jon Catchmark were both 2-for-3 with a run scored.Â
Mitchell scored single runs in the first and third innings then doubled its lead with two runs in the fifth and added three in the sixth.
Alvernia went in order for the first and second innings. Catchmark opened the third with a single, but was picked off. Sides singled with one out in the fourth and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, but was stranded. The Crusaders had three baserunners in the fifth, but didn't break through until Strouse and Catchmark opened the seventh with consecutie singles. Following a flyout and a strikeout,
Connor Boyle delivered a run-scoring single and Sides followed with another before
Chris Burns few out to end the game.
Matt Backlund took the loss allowing seven runs--five earned--on 10 hits over 5.2 innings.
Alvernia opened game two with two runs in the first inning, but Mitchell looked like it might sweep the doubleheader getting three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Malik did well to settle in retiring the last 18 batters he faced.
Alvernia tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the fourth. Strouse led off the inning with a walk and scored on a sac fly from
Ian Shaffer.
The game went to the seventh inning tied at 3-3, but Alvernia blew it open with an eight run frame. Boyle scored two runs in the inning and four players drove in a run each.
Boyle and Catchmark both collected two hits apiece in the game. Malik went the distance allowing three runs--two earned--on three hits.
Alvernia returns home to kick off the MAC Commonwealth schedule next Friday hosting Stevenson University.
