Chester, Pa. (Apr. 1, 2016) - Widener University (12-7, 6-1) scored 10 runs over the first four innings in a 10-6, rain-shortened win over Alvernia University (11-11, 5-2) Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Widener.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning then the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single from
Nathan Sides in the top of the second.
Junior lefty
Ryan Sheekey erased the first two batters via strikeout, but the Pride sustained a rally sending seven more batters to the plate scoring four times for a 5-2 lead.
The Crusaders answered back getting a pair of solo home runs in the top of the third from
Cameron Coons and
Ian Shaffer to pull back within a run at 5-4, but Widener kept the offense rolling scoring once in the third and four more times in the fourth for a 10-4 lead.
Shaffer knocked in another run in the fifth and
Franco Esposito hit the Crusaders' third solo homer of the game in the sixth.
Alvernia had two on with one out in the top of the seventh in a 10-6 game when the umpires called for a lightning delay. Both teams waited out the rain for a bit before the umpires decided to call it a complete game.
Ben Dubas had three hits for the Crusaders. Three players had two hits apiece including Coons who also scored a pair of runs.
Alvernia and Widener complete the 3-game series Saturday with a doubleheader at Alvernia.
