Ardmore, Pa. (Apr. 21, 2016) - Haverford University (18-16) collected 12 runs across two games to take a pair of wins from Alvernia University (10-20) Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Haverford.
The Fords took a 2-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the third, stringing together four hits. Haverford then capitalized on a wild pitch to go ahead 3-0.
The Crusaders responded in the top of the fourth, notching two runs of their own.
Morgan Petry opened the frame with a single, and Alvernia quickly had runners on 2nd and 3rd when the Fords' miscued on a
Morgan Psiuk bunt.
Brittany Brown's fielder's choice plated Petry, but Psiuk was unable to score a batter later.
With one out, Brittany Wolfe walked before
Bernadette Carey beat out an infield single to load the bases.
Mckenzie Miessau followed with an RBI walk of her own to cut the deficit 3-2. However, the Crusaders were unable to convert any additional runs.
Haverford added insurance runs throughout the game, tacking on a run in the fourth, the fifth, and two in the sixth to hold a 7-2 lead.
The Crusaders put base runners on each inning, including two in the top of the seventh, but were unable to scratch across more runs.
In the nightcap, the Fords again took the board first, opening the bottom of the first with a three-run homerun to right.
Alvernia found a rhythm again in the fourth, as Petry reached on an infield error. Psiuk moved Petry up 60-feet, and
Aly Shilling brought her around with a single down the line. Miessau followed Shilling with a shot to left, forcing another Fords miscue that allowed Shilling to score to shorten the gap 3-2.
Haverford regained its three run lead in the bottom half of the inning, delivering a 2-run RBI single after a pair of Crusader errors extended the inning to hold a 5-2 advantage.
The Crusaders saw pitching performances from four hurlers, with starts from
Kayla Andrews and
Taylor Fouracre.
Alvernia finishes its 3-game road stint on Saturday, traveling to Albright College of a MAC Commonwealth matchup starting at 1:00 pm.
