Reading, Pa. (Apr. 23, 2016) - Alvernia University (25-12, 15-3) scored five runs in the first inning of game one in an 11-0 win then had a 10-run fifth in a 12-3 win in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Albright College (5-26, 1-17) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Albright.
The Crusaders increased their lead over Widener to two games with the Pride splitting its doubleheader with Hood on Saturday. Alvernia needs either one win in the 3-game series with Arcadia or one loss by Widener in its 3-game series with Hood to earn the top seed in the MAC Commonwealth Championships which begin Thursday, May 5, in York.
Thomas Malik went six shutout innings in the opener scattering six hits.Â
Louis Marotta pitched a scoreless seventh to close the game. In game two the Lions racked up 13 base hits, but only manged three runs. Alvernia sent 13 batters to the plate in the fifth and drew six walks as part of the 10-run frame.
Dillon Dunne went 4-for-5 with four runs scored in the opener and
Ian Shaffer and
Joe Iacobellis had 2-hit games in the nightcap.
The Crusaders open the Arcadia series with the single game Friday at home.
