Reading, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2016) – Penn State-Altoona (2-2) netted a pair of goals in the second half to take a 2-0 victory over Alvernia University (2-2) Sunday afternoon in non-conference Women's Soccer action.
PSU-Altoona took the 1-0 advantage with 18 minutes left in regulation, driving its first goal past a diving
Jessica Plunkett into the right side corner.
The Lions tacked on an insurance goal in the 81
st minute, capitalizing on a penalty kick.
The two teams remained scoreless through the first half, combining for just eight shots in 45 minutes of action.
The Crusaders had a trio of open scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 64
th minute,
Erica Dunkelberger met PSU goalie Molly Malone head on, notching a shot straight into the chest of Malone from center.
13 minutes later,
Taylor Gough put the insert on the Crusaders lone corner to
Allison Hyde on the right side, but Malone made a sharp dive to her right to keep Alvernia scoreless.
With 4:23 left to play, Kayla MacNamee had a 1-on-1 opportunity from the right side of the box, but her shot was just within the reach of Malone.
Alvernia outshot the Lions 13-6, holding a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Plunkett collected a pair of saves on the day.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Dickinson College for a 6:00 pm kick off.
