Chester, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2017) - Widener University (7-7, 2-4) held Alvernia University (9-6, 3-3) to seven points over the final 10 minutes in a 73-64 win Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Widener.
George Williams scored on a layup with 10:04 to play to give the Crusaders a 57-56 lead, but Widener went on a 9-0 run over the next six minutes for a 65-57 lead. Alvernia went 0-for-7 from the floor during the drought which finally ended when Williams knocked down a pair of free throws.
Alvernia hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final four minutes and hit just one shot from the floor over the final 10 mintues--a jumper from
Marquis Marshall with a minute to play.
The Crusaders shot 23-for-60 from the floor in the game, just 38 percent. It was their third game of the season under 40 percent.
Marshall finished with a game-high 22 points, Williams scored 13 points, and
Alex Shippen added a dozen. Widener had three players reach double figures led by John Fender who scored 21.
Alvernia returns home to host Stevenson University on Saturday.
