Annville, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2017) - McDaniel College (10-6-2) scored with three minutes left in the second overtime to beat Alvernia University (10-10-1) by a 2-1 final in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Soccer Championships at Lebanon Valley College.
The Green Terror advance to face the host Dutchmen in the second round on Sunday at noon. Â There are four pods in action on the first weekend of the ECACs. Â Sunday's four winners will advance to the semifinals next weekend at a host to be determined.
McDaniel connected for Saturday's game winner after nearly 110 minutes. Â Nick Bowman ran onto a ball played down to the right corner and crossed the ball that Jacob Wells was able to flick back inside the near post.
Alvernia scored the opener on a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Â Austin Young hit the corner into the mix in front of the net and senior Chris Guth got his head on it for a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves held the 1-0 lead until the 51st minute when a defender was whistled for tripping a McDaniel attacker near the top of the box. Randall Hilleary buried the penalty kick low to his left to knot the game at 1-1.
Alvernia goalie Zach Rider finished the game with eight saves and Nick Over was credited with one for McDaniel.
